A Conversation on Literature, Philosophy, and Genre in Morocco with Driss Ksikes

Moroccan writer Driss Ksikes has had a varied career, with significant contributions to the fields of journalism, playwriting, media studies, and literature in Morocco. His work has attracted applause and ire both, and has sparked debates on censorship, the public sphere, and civic engagement across genres.

In this conversation, join Ksikes and Columbia professor Gil Anidjar for a discussion of these themes in relation to Ksike's most recent novel, Au détroit d'Averroès (Editions Fayard, 2019). Beginning with a reading from the English translation of the novel, the conversation will move from the novel's discussion of the teaching of Ibn Rushd/Averroes under the reign of former Moroccan monarch Hassan II to genealogies of philosophy, history, and religion in contemporary Morocco.
