Selected ME Theses in Islamic Studies

The MA in Islamic Studies reflects the global and interdisciplinary scope of the Center for the Study of Muslim Societies (CSMS), approaching Islam and Muslim societies across regions, historical periods, and fields of inquiry. The theses highlighted here demonstrate the remarkable topical and geographical breadth of our students’ research—from Islamic law, Sufism, material culture, music, politics, gender, memory, and language to questions of migration, heritage, and social life. Geographically, their work extends well beyond the Middle East, encompassing Southeast and Central Asia, South Asia, North and East Africa, Europe, and the United States, while tracing the transregional connections that have long shaped Muslim societies. Together, these projects exemplify the comparative, interdisciplinary, and globally oriented scholarship at the heart of the ISMA program and CSMS.
