The intellectual history of the medieval Islamicate and the early modern Ottoman world has been written by privileging the deeds of "great" scholars. What about those less fortunate scholars who indeed constituted the greater majority and whose seemingly insignificant lives and literary production present a more realistic picture of the social, economic, and emotional realities surrounding the scholarly culture?
