Adab Colloquium: Re-reading Rekhtah: Vali Dakkani and the Origins of Urdu Ghazal

Join us for the Adab Colloquium with Presenter Sara Hakeem Grewal (MacEwan University) and Discussant Purnima Dhavan (University of Washington).
In the third colloquium of the Adab series Sara Grewal will discuss a chapter from her forthcoming book entitled, Ghazal and the Urdu Imaginary. Her book as a whole explores the idea of Ghazal as world poetry and unpacks the question of what it means to apply the idea of the literary to the Urdu ghazal. Grewal will discuss chapter one, which focuses on the canonization of Rekhtah and the work of Valī Dakkanī at the origins of Urdu ghazal. By unreading the telos via which Rekhtah “becomes” Urdu, we can revisit Valī’s Rekhtah as a destabilized idiom of translation that resists the nationalist reification of language and literature.
