Theme of World Arabic Language Day celebration in 2020: Arabic Language Academies: Necessity or Luxury?
A number of new classes are being offered at Columbia University for the first time this Spring. From Dr Elaine Van Dalen’s course covering medical practice in pre-modern West Asia to to Matthew L Keegan's course exploring the playful, edgy texts of the Maqama to contemplate new ways of understanding the relationship between adab and the Islamic tradition, there’s a lot to choose from!
MEI is offering students: 10 fully-funded 1-hour sessions with a NaTakallam Conversation Partner on Skype. Applications are open on a rolling basis. This is an amazing opportunity to practice language with real native speakers around the world.
The KITAB project is seeking researchers who are interested in collaborating to advance their own, distinct research projects. The aim is to build a small group of academics (6-8) who will work with our corpus of 1.5 billion words of pre-modern Arabic texts (700-1500) and our datasets (including for text reuse especially).
MEI congratulates our affiliated faculty member, Dr. Amra Sabic-El-Rayess on her recently published young adult memoir which is already receiving rave reviews and lots of positive press.
